長持ちPress-on care guide

Why your press-on nails keep popping off, and how to make them last.

If a nail pops off on day one, the set isn't the problem. Nine times out of ten it's oil on the nail, a tip that's the wrong width, or hot water too soon. Here's how to fix each one.

The short answer

Press-ons last about one to two weeks with glue when three things are right: the natural nail is clean and dry, every tip matches the width of your nail, and you keep your hands out of hot water for the first hour. Adhesive tabs are gentler but usually last a day to a weekend.

The 5 reasons press-ons pop off

  1. Oil on the nail plate. Hand cream, cuticle oil or even natural skin oil stops glue from gripping. It's the number one cause of a nail lifting within hours.
  2. A tip that's too wide or too narrow. A tip that hangs over the side walls of your nail touches skin, flexes every time you type, and pops. A tip that's too narrow leaves the edges of your nail exposed and lifts at the sides.
  3. Too much glue, or glue in the wrong place. A thick blob traps air bubbles and cures unevenly. A thin, even layer bonds better than a lot.
  4. Water in the first hour. Hot showers, dishes and swimming soften fresh glue before it has fully set.
  5. Using nails as tools. Opening cans, peeling labels and scraping stickers put leverage right at the free edge, which is where a press-on is weakest.

9 fixes that make them last up to two weeks

  1. Push back cuticles first. Glue on top of cuticle skin lifts as the skin moves. Clear the nail plate so the tip sits only on nail.
  2. Buff the shine off, lightly. A few passes with a fine buffer gives the glue something to hold. Don't over-buff; thinning the nail weakens it.
  3. Dehydrate with alcohol. Wipe every nail with the prep pad or rubbing alcohol right before you apply, then don't touch your face or hair.
  4. Size every finger before you glue. Lay all ten tips out first. If you're between sizes, choose the larger one and file the sides down so it sits inside your side walls.
  5. Thin glue on both surfaces. A thin layer on your nail and a thin layer on the inside of the press-on.
  6. Press at an angle, from the cuticle. Set the tip down at the cuticle first and rock it forward. That pushes air out instead of trapping it.
  7. Hold for a full 30 seconds. Firm, even pressure on the center and the sides.
  8. Keep hands dry for an hour. No hot water, lotion or oil while the glue sets.
  9. Re-glue a lifting edge right away. A tiny drop at the first sign of lifting stops water getting underneath and saves the whole nail.

Why fit matters more than glue

Most "my press-ons won't stay on" stories are really fit stories. Drugstore sets come in fixed sizes, so a lot of people end up gluing a tip that's a millimeter too wide onto a finger that doesn't match. That nail is going to pop no matter how good the glue is.

Every Nico set is painted on tips matched to your own nail widths, and you can measure your nails in two minutes or try a $12 sizing kit in the shape you'll order. If a nail still doesn't fit when your set arrives, Emi repaints it free.

When it's the nail, not the press-on

Very oily or very bendy natural nails can be harder to bond to. Extra-careful prep helps most. If your nails are peeling or sore, give them a week or two off before your next set. Our guide on whether press-ons damage your nails covers safe removal and breaks.

Quick answers

How long should press-on nails last?

About one to two weeks with nail glue and good prep. Adhesive tabs usually last a day to a weekend.

Why do my press-ons fall off after one day?

Usually oil left on the nail, a tip that's the wrong width, too much glue, or hot water in the first hour. Clean with alcohol, size every finger, use a thin layer of glue and keep hands dry for an hour.

Can I shower with press-on nails?

Yes, once the glue has set. Avoid hot water for the first hour, and wear gloves for long dishwashing sessions to keep water from creeping under the edges.

Should I use glue or tabs?

Glue for one to two weeks of wear. Tabs for a day or a special event, or if you want the gentlest possible removal.

Can I reuse press-on nails?

Yes. Remove them with a warm, soapy soak, buff off the old glue and store them in their case. Hand-painted gel sets can be worn many times.
